From 1 to 7 October, it's breastfeeding week!
Did you know? At the Europe Hospitals, we organise interactive birth preparation sessions, including a session on breastfeeding. To find out more, click here.
In addition, it is possible to make an appointment with a lactation consultant prenatally, if you wish to orientate your choice of food for your baby, breastfeed in case of breast reduction, or if you have a history of breastfeeding failure. Appointments can be made at 02-614 27 30 (St-Elisabeth site) or 02-614 37 30 (St-Michel site).
Breast milk is always ready, at the right temperature, free and environmentally friendly. It changes according to the age and needs of your baby. It is always suitable and rich enough for your child. The longer you breastfeed, the greater the benefits. The WHO (World Health Organisation) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the child is 6 months old and then to continue breastfeeding while introducing other foods until at least 2 years of age.
Breastfeeding has many benefits for both baby and mother.
- For baby: breastfeeding reduces the risk of infections, digestive problems, allergies, anaemia, obesity and diabetes, orthodontic problems, sudden death, etc.
- For mothers: breastfeeding reduces the risk of anaemia and osteoporosis after the menopause. Breastfeeding also promotes the repositioning of the genitals, the mother-child bond and weight loss (in combination with a healthy and balanced diet).
It is important to want to breastfeed in your head and in your body. The choice must be the couple's, not the entourage's (justifications are not necessary, you must not be afraid of being judged). Your choice will be the right one.
At the Europe Hospitals, we will also help you to set up the diet of your choice for your baby and we will support you. For more information, click here.
