ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

The team comprises gynaecologists and obstetricians, each of whom has one or several specialities. The team is trilingual and provides consultations every day of the week, morning and afternoon.

Members of the team are on call night and day, providing continuity of care 24/07.

The surgical teams work 3 days a week, including one for "one day" surgery. The general practitioner is always welcome, if he so desires, to be present during the operation.

Our operating theatre is equipped for all types of conventional open surgery but also for gynaecologic laparoscopic surgery, pelvic cancer surgery, sacrocolpopexy for prolapse and breast surgery, particularly breast cancer surgery. Our expertise includes robotic-assisted surgery using a da Vinci robot for major surgical procedures.

Multidisciplinary meetings in oncology, obstetrics and infertility are organised each week to discuss as a group problematic situations, decisions to be made and treatments to be implemented, and thereby optimise communication between the various physicians who will be treating the same patient.

The team is recognised and fulfils the quality criteria in terms of training residents and assistants in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Midwives assist the obstetrician with monitoring the pregnancy. They provide pregnant women with additional information that is precious for a successful pregnancy and delivery. Pre- and postnatal physiotherapy is provided. The benefits of breastfeeding are discussed.

A team of specialised psychologists will assist the patients with difficulties following a delivery or a caesarean section as well as those who desire to be pregnant during the cycles of in vitro fertilisation; at the same token, the team will be present and provide support, if necessary, for the patients whose gynaecologic or breast cancer was surgically treated, etc. In addition, persons who wish to discuss sexologic issues may do so with a midwife who specialises in that particular area.

The Department of Gynaecology is also accredited by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG) as a training centre for assistants.
