Virtual reality in paediatrics

VIRTUAL REALITY IN PAEDIATRICS: A NEW CARD TO ACCOMPANY PAEDIATRIC CARE!

Since January 2023, our paediatric department on the St-Elisabeth site has been offering the use of a virtual reality headset to reduce anxiety and pain in our young patients.

The use of the virtual reality headset aims to transform the moment of care into a pleasant and fun moment. It is a therapy that effectively relieves the pain and especially the anxiety of the child during and after the treatment. It is based on hypnosis and distraction of the child. It is also called "digital sedation".

Children are immersed in a virtual world, guided by a voice. The experience is adapted for young patients and all content has been validated by medical professionals.

This system works particularly well with children. The nurses in the paediatric ward have found that patients and their parents are less stressed and more cheerful as a result. Everything goes more smoothly and quickly.

Patients aged 6 and over can use the system during their hospital stay or when they come to the Bambi for blood tests, suture removal, wound care etc.
