ABOUT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES

Emergency medicine gathers medical and surgical resources to deal with any emergency. It’s a cross-disciplinary speciality managed by a team of specialists in emergency medicine/care. Physicians in training are also part of the medical team. This team is responsible for taking care of any person presenting with a somatic or psychological emergency or situation by initiating an evaluation and/or treatment.

The Emergency Department welcomes you 24/7. No prior formalities are required and practical procedures will be handled in the Emergency Department.

THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF YOUR CARE AT THE EMERGENCY WARD

ADMISSION AT THE EMERGENCY WARD

The emergency reception staff will collect the necessary data for your registration. The Emergency Department is the first line of support for patients and their families.

A member of the emergency reception staff will ask you for the following documents and information :

  • What is the reason for your consultation?
  • Identity document, mobile phone number
  • Name and address of your attending physician

SUPPORT BY THE HEALTHCARE STAFF

The nurses are allocated to different service areas: patient triage, care at the reanimation rooms, the resting patients’ rooms, minor trauma rooms, outpatient department, paediatrics ward, release of mobile emergency and resuscitation (SMUR/MUG) teams, etc.

  • They ensure the patient's identity vigilance by placing the identification bracelet generated during the patient's registration.
  • They are in charge of the reception and first line triage of all patients who come to the Emergency Department by taking a short briefing (reason for consultation, current treatment, any allergy...) and by measuring the parameters (blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates, oxygen saturation, temperature...)
  • They monitor the patient during their stay in the department.
  • They provide care and treatment.

Based on the different data collected, they install the patient in the appropriate area of the ward.

The advanced training of the department's nurses (Intensive Care and Emergency Medical Assistance - Disaster Medicine Certificate) enables them to provide optimal quality care, both within and outside the hospital.

These high quality treatments, both diagnostic and therapeutic, are the result of close collaboration between the medical and nursing teams.

WHY ARE CERTAIN PATIENTS WHO ARRIVED AFTER ME TREATED FIRST?

A priority order of care is assigned to each patient when they arrive. This order is determined by the reception and orientation nurse on the basis of various factors collected during a short preliminary history and parameters measurements.

As soon as you arrive, after your administrative registration, you will be received by the reception and orientation nurse. After having assigned you a priority level of care, the nurse may also initiate treatment (pain relief, disinfection, dressing). He or she can also place you in the appropriate area of the emergency department.

You will then be examined by a physician. The time taken to take charge will depend on the severity of your pathology and the number of patients in the department to be treated.

AFTER YOUR CARE BY THE NURSING TEAM, YOU WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF BY THE MEDICAL TEAM

The Europe Hospitals are a medical training centre, which is why you may initially be examined by a physician in training. All patients will always be afterwards examined by a senior physician.

After your first nursing care, an emergency physician will come to question you, examine you and determine which additional examinations should be carried out during your stay in the emergency room (blood tests, radiological tests, etc.). If he considers it necessary, he/she can always consult with the other specialists of the institution. The emergency physician ensures the diagnostic and the medical treatment.

ADDITIONAL EXAMS

Some of the exams are performed at the emergency ward: blood tests, urine sample, etc. For other exams, you will have to go to a medico-technical service (CT scan, ultrasound, RX, endoscopy, EEG, NMR, etc.) or have a specialist consultation: ophthalmology, gynaecology, dermatology, ENT, etc.

As these additional exams are essential to establish a diagnosis and decide on an appropriate treatment, it is crucial that you wait for the results of these.

HOW LONG WILL I STAY AT THE EMERGENCY WARD?

The duration of your stay in the emergency ward will depend on various factors: the time it takes to receive the results of the additional tests, the need to observe the evolution of your symptoms, the availability of an inpatient hospital room (if your pathology requires hospitalisation), etc.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR CONSULTATION AT THE EMERGENCY WARD?

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS AFTER A VISIT OF THE EMERGENCY WARD?

In most cases, following the evaluation carried out in the emergency department by the emergency physician, you will leave the hospital.

In this case, you will leave the department with treatment and advice on possible or planned follow-up with your regular physician or a specialist in the hospital.

In the case of an unfavourable evolution of your pathology, it is important to always reconsult a physician, either in the emergency department or with another physician (primary care or specialist).

After visiting the emergency ward, a medical report will always be sent to your general practitioner.

In some cases, you will be sent to another specialist in the hospital for further investigation, including more specific tests.

In other cases, following the evaluation carried out in the emergency department, you will be hospitalised.

FORMALITIES FOR YOUR DISCHARGE FROM THE EMERGENCY WARD

When you leave the emergency department, the emergency physician will give you a number of documents:

  • A medical prescription if necessary
  • If applicable: several administrative documents (certificate for school, work and/or sports disability, insurance document...)

For each patient, a medical report is sent to the general practitioner. Primary care physicians also have access to their patients' medical records through the health platform.

MISCELLANEOUS

VALUABLES

If you carry valuable items or a significant amount of money, please let the nurse know about this. We can suggest a safety procedure for your valuables. When you leave the emergency ward, don't forget to ask for your valuable items.

Except for this procedure, the emergency ward declines all responsibility in case of loss or theft of valuables.

BILLING

The fees for your consultation and additional exams will be sent to your home in the month following your visit.

In case of a school or work accident, the bill will be sent to your home address as well. You should then contact your insurance agency.
