Kidney transplantation

Some patients are eligible for a kidney transplant. This depends on the age and health condition of the patient. We therefore perform various tests (a pre-transplant balance), to verify if a patient would benefit from a kidney transplant.

A kidney transplant may occur after starting the dialysis, but prior to the start of dialysis as well (pre-emptive kidney transplant). That way, we occasionally save a patient from having to undergo dialysis.

The transplanted kidney may come from a living donor or from a deceased donor. 

The actual transplant occurs at a university centre. Following the kidney transplant, the patient is further monitored by our Nephrology department, in close collaboration with the university centres.
